Interface & Transfer Speed (USB generation) — whether the drive uses USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, etc; higher versions offer faster data throughput.
Storage Capacity — how much data you need to store or transport (document files, media, backups, full OS images).
Physical Size & Build/Form Factor — portability and convenience (tiny “plug-and-stay” vs larger stick/pendrive).
Durability & Construction Material — casing material (metal vs plastic), resistance to physical damage, wear, and general robustness.
Compatibility — works across devices with USB-A (and whether USB-C / other ports if needed or via adapter); also OS compatibility.
The DataTraveler Micro uses USB 3.2 Gen 1 — which offers significantly higher transfer rates than USB 2.0, allowing for faster copying of files. For anything beyond small text documents — large media files, backups, or many files at once — fast USB speed reduces waiting time, improves user experience.200 MB/s read is decent, but for heavy loads (e.g. large video libraries, or trying to use this drive as external storage for editing) it will still be much slower than internal SSDs or high-end external SSDs.
These factors represent the most critical aspects that will impact your satisfaction with this product.
This is exactly what I need. I am often on the run and my other USB drives all broke. I always keep a small USB drive on my keychain and it's nice to have a small compact thumb drive that is durable and won't break.
I’ve had one of these on my keys for a couple years now and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s very durable and very compact, I’ve never had it malfunction in the years I’ve been using it.
