Determine how many games, videos, photos or backups you will store. HDDs offer better cost per TB than SSDs, making 1–6 TB HDDs attractive for bulk storage.
The interface (USB 3.0 / SuperSpeed) determines max throughput; USB 3.0 (5 Gbps nominal) is far faster than USB 2.0 in practice but still much slower than NVMe SSDs. For HDDs, realistic sustained transfer rates are limited by the drive’s mechanical speed (typically 80–160 MB/s for modern 2.5" HDDs).
2.5-inch portable HDDs are bus-powered (no external power brick) which is convenient for consoles and laptops. Desktop 3.5" drives usually require external power.
Drives often ship preformatted (this Toshiba unit ships NTFS). Reformatting may be required for Mac (HFS+/APFS/exFAT) or for specific console requirements.
Mechanical HDDs are more sensitive to drops and shocks than SSDs. Brand reputation, warranty and user reviews help estimate longevity.
USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed) on the Canvio Basics gives faster file transfers than older USB 2.0 ports and is adequate for large backups and storing games. That said, because this is a mechanical 2.5" HDD, peak sustained throughput will be limited by the disk’s mechanical performance — fine for copying, storing and streaming many media types, but not for demanding, latency-sensitive use cases (e.g., running PS5 games). If you need short load times and to run games directly from the drive, an external NVMe SSD is the better option.
These factors represent the most critical aspects that will impact your satisfaction with this product.
I bought the Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB external hard drive (model HDTB520XK3AA) to back up my files, and it’s been absolutely reliable.
Wish I would have purchased this sooner. Off loading pics and videos on this was simple and fast. Perfect for storing my drone and gopro files on. Oh did i mention how easily you can transport this to another location plug it in and show family and friends your content. Must have. Also has a great device window that you can monitor the transfer and transfer rates.
