The Roku Smart Soundbar is designed for people who want a simple, streamlined upgrade over their TV’s built-in speakers — without setting up complex home-theater hardware. Rather than a multi-speaker 5.1 or 3.1 system, it offers a 2.0 stereo output but packages in a media streamer as well, meaning you get both sound enhancement and streaming capability in one unit. That makes it particularly attractive if you want a quick, clean setup for streaming shows, casual movies, or music — without lots of cables or extra components.

Audio channel configuration and soundstage — stereo (2.0) vs multi-channel surround (5.1 or more) affects immersion and spatial realism.
Bass output / low-frequency response — presence/absence of subwoofer and how much bass depth you get.
Audio clarity (dialogue, mid/highs) — especially for TV shows, dialogue-heavy content, music.
Connectivity & ease of integration — how easily it connects to your TV or devices (HDMI ARC, optical, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi), and whether it simplifies or complicates setup.
Flexibility & convenience for everyday use — features like sound modes (dialogue, night, volume leveling), streaming capabilities built-in, and remote/app controls.
Because Roku Smart Soundbar is a 2.0-channel system (two stereo channels), it doesn’t provide true surround or multi-directional sound. This means spatial audio cues — e.g. sounds appearing behind you, or a sense of depth in a movie scene — will be limited. For standard TV watching, streaming, or music, this may not be a big issue, but for cinematic surround-sound effects, a multi-channel system would outperform it.
These factors represent the most critical aspects that will impact your satisfaction with this product.
I figured I needed to add to this review since there have been updates to the system which changed the volume control of the surround speaker system that most of us surround speaker users do not like at all. Don't get me wrong, the system as a whole is still worth the cost and the sound quality still on par as when I originally reviewed below.
Installation is near effortless, taking less then ten minutes if that (and 70% of that would be it connecting). While it is slightly disappointing its not fully wireless because of the cords connected for power
